Chemical Quiz Answers

6/6/12 12:28 PM

Here are the some of the possible answers to the WorkSafe Magazine chemical quiz.

• First, and most important, PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is not being worn.  The worker is wearing a dust mask when he should be wearing a half-mask respirator with organic vapour cartridges, at a minimum. The proper respirator is hanging outside the spray booth (improperly stored).  No gloves an improper footwear.  Coveralls or paint suits should also be worn to protect the skin from many irritants in the finishing products.  Hearing protection is not being worn. Finishing booths are loud; work in one for eight hours a day and you are sure to cause hearing loss over time.

• A number of fire hazards are present: the electrical cord inside the spray booth looks like it has been “patched up”
and is not safe to use. A pail of flammable material without a lid is near the work area. The sprayer cart contains a jug of
flammable solvent. There should be a chemical fire extinguisher nearby.

• Ergonomics is an issue: the worker is leaning over his work and using the wrong wrist position.  Also, he is standing on the wrong side, so he is getting all the overspray and breathing it in and contaminating his clothing more than he needs to.

• The finishing booth filter is not properly inserted so all the contaminates are entering the atmosphere.

• The cardboard on the ground should be tapped down to prevent a tripping hazard.

• Small containers need to be labeled as per WHMIS regulations.

• The sign on the wall says MSDS, but no MSDS book.

Thanks for playing along, so how did you do?
